Road money

The council this morning appropriated $200,000 from riverboat gambling money to fix the worst of Daviess County’s gravel roads. (They can’t use property tax money for roads without declaring an emergency.) Now that’s only enough for 19 miles, but at least it’s something.
I’ve heard people say that all Daviess County roads should be paved. Problem is, if they were, we couldn’t afford to maintain them. We can barely afford to maintain the paved roads we’ve got now since the Highway Department gets less and less money from the state each year while prices continue to rise. At least they can try to keep the gravel roads in decent condition. Other than that, I don’t know what the answer is. Where do we get the money?
